Agent-Based Simulation

What is agent-based simulation?

Agent-based simulation analyzes the impact of an individual on a holistic system. The ‘individual’ could be a human being, an animal, a group of people, or even cells. In agent-based simulation, the individual behaviors of agents are set, and how the system interacts with those agents is depicted visually. Simulation technology has been utilized for decades for manufacturing and supply chain management.

At Integrated Insight, we apply this ground-breaking software to manufacturing and logistics as well as service-based businesses such as entertainment venues and commercial businesses, and with new architectural design and construction.

Why use simulation?

Agent-based simulation enables designers, developers, and operators to better understand the impact of the environment on the experience and the effectiveness of a process. Simulations help to “get it right the first time,” by predicting future outcomes and preventing costly mistakes, and help to fine-tune operations to ensure great customer experiences. Our trained analysts build simulation models on AnyLogic, the leading software for business applications, utilized worldwide by over 40% of Fortune 100 companies.

Agent-based simulation case studies

With an interest in expanding their entertainment offering, Integrated Insight worked hand-in-hand with our client’s designers, architects, interior designers, and show producers to simulate the end-to-end experience using AnyLogic software. Our models helped identify pinch points, bottlenecks, and opportunities for more creative use of space. The simulation also gave executives and operational leaders a first-person view of the guest’s experience before ground was broken on the project.

The simulation facilitated capacity planning to estimate how much demand could be accommodated before the experience began to suffer, and rapid exit by all guests was also modeled to simulate the operation’s ability to handle emergencies. The theater model below shows the guest experience when entering and exiting the venue. Based on guest service standards developed in conjunction with the client, Integrated Insight was able to simulate where bottlenecks would occur and when wait times would fail to meet those standards. You can see the agents interacting with each other as the venue seats are filled.

The simulation below shows an agent-based transportation simulation built to help determine the optimal routing structure by seasonal events and attendance.  The buses are manned by agents that will follow designated routes and rules of the road, but also use judgement to ensure proper spacing and service is provided.  With this model we were able to provide the optimal routing structure for each level of demand and reduce bus resource need by ~15%.

Integrated Insight has leveraged agent-based simulation to help organizations in a variety of industries. Recently, we partnered with the Homeland Security Institute at Purdue University to build a model that is designed to minimize the amount of time it takes for police to respond to an active shooter incident at a theme park. The applications for agent-based simulation are widespread and applicable for any organization wanting confirmation before making structural changes.

The process of testing new facilities with agent-based simulation helps your team find out what works and what doesn’t before the money is spent. To see agent-based simulation in action, view this simulation model of a museum.
